C33 – Painting and Decorating Contractor

A painting and decorating contractor prepares by scraping, sandblasting or other means and applies any of the following: paints, papers, textures, fabrics, pigments, oils, turpentines, japans, driers, thinners, varnishes, shellacs, stains, fillers, waxes, adhesives, water and any other vehicles, mediums and materials which adhere by evaporation and may be mixed, used and applied to the surfaces of structures and the appurtenances thereto for purposes of decorating, protecting, fireproofing and waterproofing.

The Painting and Decorating (C-33) Examination is divided into six major sections. These sections are:

1. General Principles (25%)

painting, repainting, wallcovering, waterproofing, and specialty coating work

surface preparation, priming, and application of finishes and wallcoverings

environmental conditions that affect painting and wallcovering work

2. Materials (25%)

selection, mixing, and application of various coatings

considerations for the application of different coatings on different surfaces

disposal procedures

3. Tools and Equipment (15%)

terminology, functions, and operations

care, cleaning, set-up and storage methods

4. Safety Procedures (15%)

Cal/OSHA requirements

General Industry Safety Orders

accident prevention procedures and first aid for working near high voltage transmission equipment, on high jobs, and around toxic environments

ventilation procedures and proper use of respirators

recognition and correction of unsafe working conditions or equipment

5. Plans and Specifications (10%)

interpretation of blueprints, architectural drawings, schematics, and written specifications

interpretation of contract provisions and compliance with the Uniform Building Code regulations regarding flame spread classifications for materials

6. Elementary Mathematics (10%)

addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of whole numbers and fractions

standard industry calculations to estimate labor and material requirements (e.g., conversion of square measurements to standard feet and inches, factoring of irregular surface areas to determine the actual coverage requirements, computation of decimal equivalents to measure wallcoverings)
